Praziquantel is a wide-spectrum antiparasitic medication that treats various infections caused by tapeworms, flukes, and schistosomes. It functions by immobilizing and breaking down the parasites, facilitating their elimination from the body.

This treatment is particularly effective against flatworms and trematodes, positioning it as a primary choice for severe parasitic infections.

Praziquantel is frequently prescribed for the following parasitic infections:

Schistosomiasis (Blood Fluke Disease) – An infection caused by Schistosoma species, impacting the liver, intestines, and bladder. Liver Fluke Infections (Clonorchiasis, Fascioliasis, Opisthorchiasis) – Affecting the liver and bile ducts, often contracted from contaminated water or undercooked fish. Lung Fluke Infections (Paragonimiasis) – Linked to chronic cough and lung impairment. Intestinal Tapeworms (Taeniasis) – Typically acquired through contaminated pork or beef, can lead to digestive problems. Cysticercosis (Larval Tapeworm Infection) – May lead to cyst formation in muscles, brain, and eyes. Neurocysticercosis (Brain Tapeworm Infection) – A serious condition where tapeworm larvae invade the brain, potentially causing seizures.

For Schistosomiasis (Blood Fluke Infections): Adults & children aged over 4 years: 40mg/kg as a single dose OR 20mg/kg twice daily for 1 day.

For Liver & Lung Flukes (Clonorchiasis, Opisthorchiasis, Paragonimiasis): Adults & children over 4 years: 25mg/kg three times a day for 2-3 days.

For Intestinal Tapeworms (Taeniasis): Adults & children over 4 years: 5-10mg/kg as a single dose. Follow-up stool tests may be necessary to confirm elimination.

For Cysticercosis (Larval Tapeworm Infections): Adults & children over 4 years: 50mg/kg daily, split into 3 doses, for 14 days. Often prescribed in conjunction with anti-inflammatory drugs to mitigate complications.

Take with food – Enhances absorption and effectiveness. Swallow whole with water – Avoid crushing or chewing due to the unpleasant taste. Avoid alcohol – It may exacerbate side effects.

Lightheadedness, nausea, headaches, stomach discomfort. Tiredness, drowsiness, slight elevation of liver enzymes. Severe allergic reactions, erratic heartbeat, confusion (particularly in neurocysticercosis cases).

Not recommended for use during pregnancy (first trimester) – Consult a healthcare provider if pregnant. Exercise caution when driving or using heavy machinery – May induce dizziness or drowsiness. Use with care in patients with liver disease – Dosing adjustments may be needed. Discuss with a doctor before using if other medications are being taken (e.g., anti-epileptics, steroids).
