Description:
Nebivolol is a third-generation beta-blocker mainly used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and other heart-related conditions. Unlike conventional beta-blockers, Nebivolol has the ability to dilate blood vessels by releasing nitric oxide, which enhances blood flow and decreases blood pressure, typically without significantly impacting heart rate in most patients.
This highly selective β1-adrenergic receptor blocker is beneficial for patients who may suffer from side effects caused by older beta-blockers, such as tiredness and erectile dysfunction.
Uses & Indications:
Primary Indications:
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) – Assists in reducing blood pressure and preventing cardiovascular complications.
Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) (Mild to Moderate Cases) – Enhances heart performance and lessens heart strain.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) – Aids heart health by decreasing oxygen demand and boosting blood circulation.
Arrhythmias (Irregular Heartbeats) – Can help regulate heart rhythm disorders, particularly tachycardia.
Off-Label Uses:
Anxiety & Performance Anxiety – Occasionally prescribed to manage physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat.
Migraine Prevention – May help lower migraine occurrence in some individuals.
Aortic Dissection Management – Aids in controlling heart rate and blood pressure to prevent the condition from worsening.
Dosage & Administration:
For Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Initial Dose: 5mg once daily (may be adjusted). Maintenance Dose: 5-10mg once daily. Maximum Dose: 40mg per day (rare instances).
For Chronic Heart Failure (CHF): Initial Dose: 1.25mg once daily (increased gradually over weeks). Target Dose: 10mg once daily, based on tolerance.
For Arrhythmias or Coronary Artery Disease: 5-10mg once daily, adjusted by the physician.
Administer at the same time daily, with or without food. Do not discontinue abruptly – sudden cessation can lead to rebound hypertension or aggravate heart conditions. Dose modifications may be necessary for patients with kidney or liver issues.
Possible Side Effects:
Common: Fatigue, dizziness, bradycardia, light headaches. Less Common: Insomnia, leg swelling (edema), cold hands and feet, mild digestive complaints. Rare (Seek Medical Attention): Difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, depression, fainting, or exacerbation of heart failure symptoms.
Warnings & Precautions:
Not suitable for individuals with severe bradycardia or cardiogenic shock. Exercise caution in diabetic patients – it may obscure signs of hypoglycemia. Should be avoided in cases of severe liver impairment – dosing adjustments may be necessary. Not advised during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary – consult a physician regarding risks.
Storage:
Keep in a cool, dry location at room temperature (20-25°C). Store out of reach of children and away from direct sunlight.
